October 2018 Ipsy Review

Ipsy is a $10 monthly service that sends out 5 skincare, hair care and occasionally the odd fragrance sample to subscribers. Usually items are sample sized but occasionally they send out  full sized items as well. Sometimes it’s pretty hit or miss for me though; I saw the contents of my October Ipsy bag and all I could think was “Don’t threaten me.”

I’ve come to enjoy and almost prefer loose pigments to pressed powders. I find I have more control with loose pigments if it’s a neutral shade. Naked Cosmetics pigments are very pigmented and finely milled, easy to work with. In fact, this is the brand that made me acquiesces and start tolerating loose pigments. Heavy Metal HE-03 though...

Gold can be a neutral enough shade on my skin tone but this was so bold that I am just going to have to develop some makeup skills. I usually escape the house with one shadow on, when I wear makeup, but this shade is going to force me to learn how to blend eyeshadows and learn color theory. I may try to repurpose it as a nail polish.

It’s a sad day when a cleanser is one of my favorite items in an subscription bag. Really it’s a testament to how lack luster the rest of the month was. So far as cleansers go though, this one is pretty great. It has vitamin C and smells like some combination of lemon, orange and kumquat. The packaging is clear so I’m wondering if the permeable light will effect the vitamin C in the formula. It’s a gel cleanser that, amazingly, actually feels like it cleans. There are (biodegradable) micro beads mixed in but only sparingly so those don’t contribute to the clean feeling I am left with after washing. Not only am I left feeling clean, an amazing feat for a gel cleanser, but my face doesn’t feel stripped of all moisture afterwards! I’ve only been using this in the shower so I have maybe a quarter of the container remaining but oh my god, I’m trying to fight the urge to buy more.

I’ve received this eyeliner twice in the past and I could not give this little guy away fast enough. So the one thing it has going for it is how incredibly black it is. I’m out of pros at this point. The felt tip is too stiff so I have zero control when using it. The tip is far too wide so my hooded eyes are always engulfed in liner. It bleeds into the fine lines on my lids. It’s a liquid liner (not my go-to eyeliner type).  It’s advertised as waterproof but that’s a damn lie. This liner is just not something I need in my life so I gave it to a coworker who loves both Eyeko and liquid liner.

I was so excited to get this brush. It’s the only one of its type in my collection. I haven’t actually used it yet; I don’t fill in my brows and I haven’t owned a gel liner in years. At least now I have an excuse to buy gel liner. After my kid commandeered my $1 ELF brush I had been avoiding purchasing a liner brush knowing I would eventually receive one.

This brush has a nice long handle for easy control, small bristled that are soft yet stiff, and zero scratchiness. The bristles are small and thin enough that it allows me to be precise (I tried this with dark eyeshadow as liner and I tried brushing the end of an eyeliner pencil to apply product). I may start filling my brows (no, really I won’t). I desperately want to buy a gel liner but I have so many pencil liners I don’t think I can justify the purchase.

The moment you realize you are hostage to your bad makeup and subscription boxes because you don’t want to be wasteful...

I love this gloss. I mean, I really love this gloss. The shade is perfect for my skin tone giving me a slightly frosty, definitely glassy mildly-pink but totally natural look. It’s great for a no-makeup makeup look; I look out together without actually looking like I tried. I only wish it wasn’t MAC. I learned in high school that MAC lip glasses are just terribly sticky and maddening. That color though! It’s definitely worth the trade off in this case.

The total value of my bag was $57.92, the highest I’ve had in a very long time. Like every other Ipsy month, I started off hating the bag only to come around after a month or so. It could very well be the result of me forcing myself to like something I am paying money for but I will not deny my love for the Murad face wash, a brush of any sort or my new MAC lip glass. The value was there for me in the October bag just with the gloss alone. Add in the value of the brush and cleanser and there you go, October was a worth $29.73 to me. While the shadow is valuable, it isn’t worth anything to me personally because I most likely will not find any use for it unless I try to diy nail polish.
