June 2019 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a $15 monthly beauty subscription box that offers 5-6 sample and full-sized makeup, skincare, and hair care products from brands both high end and only known within the beauty box community. The idea of tackling June’s box is a little daunting. Typically, this would be the first indication that it was a lackluster box. Being more realistic, I’m probably suffering from product overload. I received:

May 2019 Birchbox

That's more diversity than the contents of any of my boxes has ever seen. -_-
Birchbox is a $15 monthly subscription that provides subscribers with 5-6 beauty samples and the occasional full-sized product. Birchbox is great for people who favor skin care or hair care over makeup items. Earlier this year Birchbox started various offerings including picking one of the items in your box, a choice of curated boxes, swapping out that month’s box for a select full sized item, swapping out that month’s box for store credit, or leaving it all up to fate and letting the algorithm surprise you. I find myself opting for curated boxes lately; even if not every item is a perfect fit, I’ve generally given up on trusting the algorithm to select even a fraction of my items. May’s theme was “Get Insipired.”
I forgot all about the included sticker, oops.

April 2019 Birchbox Review

Alas, It’s August and I’m reviewing April’s clutter still. There is shame. Birchbox is a $15 a month subscription that offers 5 to 6 beauty related items. Of all of my subscriptions, Birchbox is my least favorite. The good news is they’ve been trying to turn it around since they announced the price increasing the number and quality of the monthly curated boxes and they now offer at least 6 samples a month.

March 2019 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a $15 a month subscription that offers 5 to 6 beauty related items. Birchbox is historically my least favorite subscription box of the ones I’m subscribed to but they’ve been trying to turn it around since they announced the price increase with more curated box options, additional samples, and new brand offerings. I believe my March 2019 box was before they announced the price increase and so it still features only 5 items. I also feel that I must defend my subscription by stating that I locked in my price at $10 a month for an annual subscription prior to the price increase.

February 2019 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a $15 monthly subscription that provides members with 5 deluxe beauty, skincare and hair care samples in sometimes-cute little boxes can be repurposed as gift or storage boxes. I'll be honest, most of mine just end up in the garbage. Recently Birchbox has increased their price from $10 a month to $15 for new members but hopefully they step up the quality with the price increase. If you're interested, you can use my referral code here.

January 2019 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a subscription service that provides members with 5 sample sized beauty, makeup or hair care items for $10 a month right to your front door. Now, unfortunately it looks like the price will be going up to $13 a month (there damn well better be an improvement for that price point) but you can lock in a year for $110 if you subscribe before 24 Mar 2019.

December 2018 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a $10 monthly subscription that offers 5 (sometimes more) skincare, hair care and beauty samples in a cute little box that will contribute to further clutter and hoarding in your home. Birchbox likes to focus on mid-range and prestige brands so their samples are often on the smaller side. If an increased fire hazard sounds like a great idea to you, here’s a referral link. December’s box was one of the better boxes I’ve had in a while:

November 2018 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a $10 monthly beauty subscription that tends to provide (mostly skincare and hair care) samples of brands ranging from mid-range to prestige. I’ve been a subscriber for 2 years now and while there are better subs out there, I just cannot quit you, Birchbox. Call it fear of missing out, maybe.

October 2018 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is one of the OG subscription boxes and arguably one of the most popular. Birchbox is known for providing members with high end brands and focusing on skincare and hair care but the sample sizes are typically smaller than what you would find in Ipsy, Allure and Target and items aren’t always as accessible for purchase like Play! by Sephora. September 2018 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a subscription that delivers 5 sample sized makeup, hair care and skincare items to your mailbox for $10 a month. The sample sizes might not be the largest but Birchbox is a great get if you care about trying luxury brands you might otherwise not feel comfortable dropping cash on. Not to mention the cute gift boxes that can be repurposed if you have more creative ability than I do.

August 2018 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a subscription service that delivers 5 sample sized beauty items to your doorstep for $10 a month. Birchbox sends out a variety of items so each box is tailored to subscribers based on a profile they set up upon signing up. Brands often range from mestige to high end but it’s a great way for people like me to try products and brands they would have a hard time otherwise dropping that kind of money on.

July 2018 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is a $10 monthly subscription that provides members with 5 deluxe beauty, skincare and hair care samples in sometimes-cute little boxes that contribute to clutter can be repurposed as gift or storage boxes. Posts are going to be pretty primitive for a bit as I play catch up (sorry, guys) so let’s get straight to the quick and to the pointless.

Davines LOVE Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner-$28 for full sized shampoo, $32 for full sized conditioner
MakeupDrop Original-$20 for full sized

I greatly dislike getting hair care samples in subscription boxes but I appreciate how large Davines shampoo samples usually are this one did a surprisingly good job at washing my hair. I was able to get a decent lather going without much effort. I love that the conditioner was custard-thick. It didn’t provide the best moisture but it worked better than my last couple of Davines conditioners. The smell of this duo was herbal, almost like cooking with sage and thyme; it wasn’t my favorite scent but it was acceptable. I do wish conditioner samples were bigger than shampoo samples.

This, surprisingly, was the stunner of the box. Holy crap, as bold of a red as this shade is, I’m in love with the rosy glow it leaves on my cheeks (swatched below). It isn’t that raw flesh pink either but a deep blushing red. I’m not too sure about the cooling sensation I’m supposed to feel. I get a little bit of a cooling feeling when I get a direct breeze on my face from my tower fan but really, there’s no real minty fresh face feel to this blush. I’m tempted to try it as a lip stain. The shade was so beautiful that I ended up buying two gel blushes by The Sephora Collection (I had a $5 store credit to burn and some samples to claim).

I love something between a cream cleanser and a foam cleanser. Creams are incredible. Think Clean & Clear, Neutrogena, any drugstore cream cleanser really. Then there are the cream cleansers that just drive me nuts like La Roche Posay. The other end of the spectrum is the foaming cleanser. These are hit or miss for me, mostly miss. I often find foaming cleansers too drying. Many gel cleansers that foam just create a slippery film on the surface of my face and strip oils from my face but not much else while non-foaming cream cleansers are hydrating but add a filmy layer on my face without feeling like they removed any dirt at all. Real Chemistry created a lice marriage between the two types of cleansers. I didn’t find that it stripped too much oil from my face (though it can be slightly drying if I’m too vigorous about agitating) and I felt like it actually did clean my face without adding an extra layer of cleanser film. The only slight con to using this product is it takes a while to wash it all away. This might be great for some people to give that assurance that their face is actually clean but it wasn’t the best quality for me because I’m constantly running late and the entire process just slowed me down a bit in the mornings. Still, I would award a B+ for functionality.

Same hydrator, different brand. I do enjoy the sample size, it’s fairly generous at 10mL. A little bit goes a long way and even though it did a great job at hydrating without the oily feeling that comes with cream moisturizers, it’s fairly easy to go overboard with application and end up with a tacky face. I tried wearing this on top of the Caudalie Vinoperfect serum that I’ve been using for the past few months now and I felt over-hydrated and a little tacky so I think I will be putting this away until the windy autumn months where my foundation coverage will be a little heavier and my moisturizers will be need to be more of a gel texture.

I don’t think I’ve ever been more upset with any tool that I’ve received in a subscription box. The silicone sponge is a cute concept and all but this little guy was so tiny that it was hard to use on my entire face and I don’t wear under eye concealer so its purpose was lost there as well. I feel like I would have had more luck with this sample if I enjoyed full coverage base makeup but since I usually go for a mostly sheer makeup look, the heavy, streaky application with this sponge just didn’t work for me. A ton of people complain about streakiness when applying with a silicone sponge but clearly the answer is to blend everything out with either a sponge or a brush. Here is where I ask “Then why use a silicone sponge?” No fucking clue. This product makes no sense to me outside of the novelty of it all. I can save on the amount of wasted product by applying with this but I would just be removing any excess product with a brush or sponge anyway so I reiterate, “No fucking clue.”

Arrow Cooling Cheek Tint sheered out (left) and unblended (right)
I enjoyed July's Birchbox. I loved the Arrow cooling cheek tint and Real Chemistry foaming cleanser. I was just grateful that the shampoo and conditioner were samples that were somewhat suited for my hair type (coarse and frizzy) even if not exactly a product intended for black girl hair. I won't scoff at a new tool (generally) and the Dr. Jart+ hydrogel will get some love in the near future.

Thanks for putting up with the shittier post today, again I'm playing serious catch up and the 4 month old remora won't let me out of her site long enough to eat dinner, let alone blog, so I sneak them in when I can. Things will get better. In the mean time, thanks for your patience.

February 2018 Birchbox Review

It snowed quite a bit today and felt like February outside so sure, why not throw in a February review mid-April? I feel like Birchbox did not really try in February and yet I still managed to benefit a bit in value in just the first item I noticed.

Birchbox Review for September 2017

I was just sitting back washing my face and masking (something I haven't had time to do for most of this month) and I had a quick feeling of what bliss is. My husband is out working, the kids are in bed (and actually quiet), my mother-in-law is visiting her other son and his wife for most of the evening. I have found silence. And as I type this I hear the door and slowly whither inside. It was sweet while it lasted. But in my short reverie I decided I'm going to color with Lizzie when I wake up tomorrow.

What does any of this have to do with a Birchbox review, you ask?

July Birchbox Review

Hey guys, dropping off a July Birchbox review before August then catching up on some Game of Thrones premiers because... kids... so let's get this ball rolling.

For those of you who don't know, Birchbox is a monthly subscription box that sends various items like skincare, makeup, haircare and fragrances based on a personal profile you create for $10 a month. Birchbox has a system where you can choose one of your five samples, often a choice between three featured samples that month, you may choose the curated box which is often curated by a collaborator or an editor (these boxes tend to have a higher retail value), and the final option which is just sit back and let the algorithm choose all five of your samples for you based off of a profile you created. This time none of the three sample choices (Air Repair Complexion Boosting Moisturizer, Jouer Lip Enhancer and Marcelle 3-in-1 Eye Makeup Remover Gel) nothing really stood out to me so I went balls to the wall and opted for the curated box. Probably not doing that again. The curated box was supposed to contain Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser,Juliette Has a Gun Anyway, Oribe Matte Waves Texture Lotion, MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Skin, and Beautaniq Beauty Blush Serum in Sunrise. I ended up with:
CF = Cruelty Free, V = Vegan

June 2017 Birchbox Review

Hey guys, so I'm finally getting around to reviewing the final box of the month. 'Bout damn time, non? For those of you who don't know, Birchbox is a subscription box that sends out 5 deluxe or sample sized items a month for $10 and no shipping cost. Items sent out are based on a profile you create upon subscribing so my box is just one of the variations sent out to people in the month of June. This month's bag was surprisingly makeup heavy and had 7 samples instead of the standard 5. It included:

The box itself was pretty cute, giving off a more vibrant mid-century vibe. So far I can only attest to four of the boxes being cute, December 2016, March 2017, April 2017 and tentatively June 2017.

Unfortunately I was unable to use the Oribe Gold Lust shampoo and conditioner. I just recently got my starter locs done out on my trip back home so washes have been less frequent and aggressive. It's a shame too because Oribe usually smells fantastic and I was excited to get a chance to try something from them that isn't a dry shampoo or texturizing spray. Unfortunately my decision to get locs was more of an afterthought: I had talked about my desire to do it back home for years (it's easier to find someone to do a two strand twist method vs the palm roll method) but I hadn't actually gone through the steps to set up an appointment until very last minute.

I feel like I just lost everybody's attention with that last monologue.

I haven't had too much time with this product yet but I'm enjoying the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum. It absorbs well and doesn't feel tacky or oily. I loved that I had Estée Lauder included in my box. Not only is it a high end brand that I've been wanting to try out but it's a product I'd actually use. Tiny as it is, it's still a pretty valuable sample. And to be perfectly honest, this is a larger sized sample than one would usually expect from Birchbox. I recently purchased a serum so this little guy is going to hang out as a backup when I run out of the serum I actually purchased.

The Beauty Crop made yet another appearance in one of my Birchboxes, this time in the form of a blush. I was wondering if Birchbox ever sends full sized samples anymore (they used to drop the occasional brush or nail polish in a box but that was before my time) all while failing to realize my blush that I received is full  sized. The richer cream shade provides so much pigment that it's almost too difficult for me to work with. Just the slightest tap of your finger will give you blush for days to work with. It also blends fairly easily. The peach powder shade was far less impressive. It has a satin finish to it but it's so difficult to pick up any pigment with this shade. Any swatches just look muted, and unfortunately the peach shade does not show up at all on my cheeks. I had to be pretty aggressive to get the peach shade to even show up in the swatch below. If I combine both of these on my face the guava (coral?) shade gives a punch of color while the satin peach shade gives the most subtle glow. I'm sure it would look amazing on a fair skinned person but unfortunately I am too warm and dark for this compact to be overly noticeable.

The Eau de Parfum sample I got from Kensie is beautiful. From the scent to the packaging, everything about this sample was just perfect. My profile states that I want to receive a bonus perfume sample no more than 6 times a year and oh my god, am I glad that this was one of those times. Would I spend the $55 for a full bottle of it? Probably not since I so rarely wear perfumes anyway. Kensie describes their fragrance as having top notes of peach, mandarin and green, middle notes of cyclamen, rose, jasmine, orange flower, oakmoss and violet, and bottom notes of musk, amber, cedarwood, sandalwood, tonka and vanilla. My nose doesn't work that way so let's say it smells slightly heady and musky while smelling very fresh and clean. It's not too perfumey or floral smelling to me with an almost crisp scent of fruit but it's not quite there, if you catch my meaning (you don't). I'll just stick with the manufacturer's description.

The Mellow Cosmetics Liquid Lip Paint was a nice addition to the box. It is a creamy matte formula that has great staying power but it does transfer quite a bit. It's hard to apply and not be messy about it though. It's a very pretty deep berry shade, even though it's a shade I cannot see myself ever reaching for. It seems more like an autumn color than a summer color too. The value was estimated because once again, it would appear that Birchbox has listed the incorrect volume on their site. It usually happens for at least one of my items every month.

Ah, the great disappointment of this month's box: Manna Kadar Priming Shadow Stick. I received mine broken. Reading reviews for this product, it looks like 99.9% of subscribers received a broken shadow stick. I complained to Birchbox about my shadow stick but at that point they had run out of stock to replace mine so I ended up with 50 Birchbox points, which translates to $5.00 credit in their store. This is perfect, especially considering that I for the most part am not planning on buying anything through Birchbox within the next 6 months before my points expire.

Complaints aside, this shadow stick is incredibly creamy and has a nice silvery-taupe shade that probably will not work on my skin tone without looking too 90's frosty. However, if I ever want to work on a throwback Spice Girls look I can use this and a dark brown lipstick, lose like 50-75 lbs and let my ass hang out in some platform shoes. It's settled, I think I may have just figured out my Halloween costume.

My total box value this month was $51.29. That looks completely wrong and I'm now forced to admit that math is not my forté. It cannot be right simply by virtue of my Birchboxes never having a very high value. This value would be almost entirely due to the Estée Lauder serum, Beauty Crop blush and perhaps the Manna Kadar shadow stick though i almost don't want to include that in the total because it arrived annihilated. The dark horse superhero of this box was the Kensie perfume, hands down. It has a very soothing, beautiful (musky?) scent that is just masculine enough to draw me in without giving the impression that I should be wearing my flannel and Doc Martens. Side note: I really miss my flannel shirt and Doc Martens my husband threw in the Goodwill pile when we were purging my closet just before The Big Move out to Chicago. Those were late teens/early 20's staples of my life.

Swatched left to right: The Beauty Crop blush (powder on the left, cream on the right), Mellow Cosmetics liquid lipstick in New York, and a Nyx Gotcha Covered Concealer in medium from my Target Beauty Box that somehow sneaked its way onto this post.

Birchbox Review May 2017

Every month Birchbox sends out a box (sometimes cute, usually not) with 5 samples at a cost of $10. Birchbox likes to send higher end brands so sample sizes tend to be on the smaller side but I won't complain about that unless they're sending foil packets. Another Birchbox trait is that they are more skincare/haircare heavy as opposed to Ipsy or GlossyBox which are more makeup heavy. This is fine with me (the skincare side at least) since I am also subscribed to Ipsy so that more or less covers my makeup fix. If you're interested, you can click my referral link here. This month was pretty decent. I received:

April 2017 Birchbox Review

Birchbox is one of the first boxes I receive in a month and yet it's somehow one of the last posts to go up. Sorry guys. So, remember how much I bitched about Birchbox in the very beginning? I think I'm going to retract most of that vitriol I felt toward the company. I loved this month's box, possibly more than Ipsy (but the bag itself is pretty hard to beat this month). Like Ipsy, Birchbox is a $10 a month subscription that provides you with samples ranging from makeup, skincare, hair care and lifestyle items. My boxes tend to lean heavily toward skincare and hair care and this month was no exception (referral code here). It's also 11:00 PM, my brother flew into town for like 2 days with no downtime scheduled, I've been up since 4:15AM and I have work tomorrow at 6:00AM so this will be a quick-and-to-the-pointless today.

Products that I received were:

February Birchbox First Impressions

Birchbox is a $10 a month subscription that sends 5 samples of mid-to-high-end products right to your doorstep. The samples are on the small size by if you like high end and skincare, keep reading. If larger sample sizes and more makeup oriented subscriptions are more your thing then check out my Ipsy reviews.

I won't Bullshit you, I prefer Ipsy because they have a superior points system (Ipsy gives you points for every item you review, Birchbox only offers points for 5 reviews throughout the lifetime of your account), Ipsy offers larger sample sizes (though you run the risk of getting drugstore brand things which honestly doesn't bother me), and Ipsy leans more toward makeup while Birchbox is pretty haircare (boo!) and skincare (yay!) heavy. That being said, Birchbox gives me the opportunity to try different brands that I otherwise wouldn't splurge for blindly (Hi, Dr. Brandt!) I would say my biggest Birchbox complaint is paying $10 for frequently getting foil packets. Or the inability to opt or of something like dry shampoo (more below on this). Ok, maybe more than one complaint. I would complain about shades but it took Ipsy a very long time to hit a stride with my profile. Now that I can check turning people off from potentially subscribing (sorry) on to this month's samples.

January Birchbox First Impressions

I'm trying this new thing where I do things in the month that they're due. I've gone 32 years without doing this once. Ever. Fortunately, Birchbox samples are so tiny that they're pretty easy to blast through and I don't have to worry about getting too thorough of a feel for them because they're gone before I can ever really get to that point, where I'm still working on a lip balm I got from a subscription box back in August. And just in case that was a strong enough selling point (it wasn't, it really wasn't) here's a referral link to get you started.
